Manual Mirror Control Door Reinforcement Plate

Manual Mirror Control Door Reinforcement Plate

$14.00

For those Fiero owners that have manual mirrors, we all know that the door panel over the years has become weakened from the movement and in many cases has warped the door panel so it no longer sits flush and it can even pull the door panel away from the track it normally sits in.

This plate is thin enough to still fit within the track and help flatten it out the door panel. If you have manual mirrors, even if it has yet to warp, this is a must have to fix, or to prevent damage in the first place.

The price is $14.00 Shipped to the Upper 48

Installation Instructions

Before starting the package should include two replacement hex nuts for the mirror control bezel, two white trim panel fasteners in case some of yours are damaged, and the reinforcement plate for the bezel.

The job should take about half an hour to an hour to complete. For the “Been there, done that” types, it’s a 10 minute job. The repair goes as follows:

Panel Removal

  1. Lower the window

  2. Disconnect the battery (8mm wrench) if you have either electric windows or door locks

  3. Remove armrest by popping the plug at the top of the armrest (smallest flathead screwdriver possible), and removing the three phillips screws

  4. Remove door latch trim plate by popping the Fiero emblem and the circular plug, again, using the smallest possible flathead screwdriver available. Pull off the inside locking knob by hand or pry off. Remove two small phillips screws. Push lock stem back into the locked position and remove trim plate.

  5. If you have manual windows, push off spring clip (door handle clip removal tool, or two small screwdrivers, and remove window hand crank and plate.

  6. Remove small hex screw from glass side of mirror control bezel. Push control knob down through bezel.

  7. Remove door panel (trim pad door panel remover tool recommended, if not, available, use two putty knives and place on both sides of each trim panel fastener and pop fasteners out. Screwdrivers will work but extra care must be taken not to damage panel backing. Whatever tool(s) are used, pry panel back slightly to see trim panel fastener location, and place tool as close as possible to the fastener before popping them out. Broken or missing fasteners should be replaced. If more than the two provided are needed, replacements may be obtained at our local automotive store.

Repair

  1. Replace any missing or damaged trim panel fasteners on door panel

  2. Remove the two hex nuts (9mm) from the bottom of the bezel. Caution: THese hex nuts are “self tapping” nuts and don’t always just unscrew; they are just as likely to strip the soft metal bezel posts. Sliding a small screwdriver under the nut and providing upward pressure will aide successful removal. As a recommended alternative, use a pair of dykes and cut off the nuts (the nuts, not the posts) and replace with the new provided nuts in the kit.

  3. Clear whatever little insulation may be in the way of the reinforcement plate for the flattest fit possible. Any rough edges or burrs should be filed from the plate before installation. Position the plate with the angled corner parallel to the angled edge of the bezel. Tighten hex nuts carefully and alternately. Do not overtighten, when it’s snug, you’re done. If the posts (close to the bezel) are stripped, try adding a washer or two so the nut will situate on a non-stripped part of the post. If all else fails, a new bezel can be ordered (approx $9.00)

Door Panel Re-installation

  1. Align mirror control toggle to slot in bezel and push into bezel. Tighten hex screw.

  2. Align top edge of panel, making sure it seats firmly especially around the bezel area. Seat trim panel fasteners with the heel of your hand. A note of caution - the lower / rearward clip on the corder should have cut-off end. This is necessary as a full length clip will interfere with the full lowering of the window, stopping it about half an inch short of full down. If you replace this clip, cut off the end before reinstalling the panel.

  3. Re-install other pieces in reverse order of their removal.
